The façade, in travertine limestone, dates from the reconstruction in late 15th century. It is tentatively attributed to Andrea Bregno, and is one of the first examples of Italian Renaissance architecture. Pope Alexander VII commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini to modify the façade by adding the arms of the Chigi to the summit of the tympanum, and added the candelabra on either side of the tympanum.
